Ljova is a New York-based composer, performer, arranger and collaborator. He's worked as a composer with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silkroad Ensemble, The Louisville Orchestra, Brooklyn Rider, and others; as an arranger with Ricky Martin, Kronos Quartet and Gustavo Dudamel; and as a composer on several feature, documentary, and animated films. His ensemble Ljova and the Kontraband recorded a Tiny Desk concert for NPR.
Ljova will be in Austin for the premiere of the documentary film "Searching for Satyrus" with his score -- and after the film, he'll come to Batch to perform a solo set.
Ljova's solo project, "Enter The Fadolín" introduces a new instrument into the classical cannon -- the fadolín –– that combines the range of the violin, viola and most of the cello, in one unique sonority. Ljova establishes a context by presenting music by Bach (originally written for the keyboard), his Irish contemporary Turlough O'Carolan (originally performed on the folk harp), a theme by Dvorak originally written for the orchestra, and some pieces written especially for this unique, haunting new instrument, by Ljova himself.
